Hopeful

When February gives way to March, I get spring fever. A simple change in the calendar has me thinking of biking, golf, gardening, and drifting along the river. I savor the sun as it seems a bit stronger and warmer looking for any sign of the impending change in seasons.

In my search I observe four feet of white wet snow. My driveway looks like a luge track with snow banks hugging an icy ribbon just wide enough for my car.

There are no yarding deer yet, no skunks betraying their presence before I see them, and no foxes running across the icy river searching for food for their young. The bulbs have yet to poke through the snow looking for sunshine and the trees remain in deep sleep without swollen buds.

But it is March and I no longer feel the dark, cold of winter. Instead I am hopeful and continue to search for the signs of spring soon to come.

  1. One thing that made me feel better yesterday is that it is officially meteorological spring. Here in Chicago, it is still cold and fairly gray. March is a long month - teasing with the promise of spring in April. Keep your chin up. Those bulbs WILL eventually poke through the ground and brighten your life!

  2. Hang in there, spring will come and the luge track will disappear. As my husband began his spring pruning, I wandered the backyard spying the tulip bulbs breaking through. Soon there will be more signs of spring.

  3. Dear WB,
I remember my first winter in the Midwest. Coming from Seattle, I was shocked and devastated to see snow throughout March. When I saw the first crocus of Spring, I cried. I knelt down in awe and gratitude. Now that I am in my 6th long winter, I am a bit less dramatic. A bit.

I look forward to hearing how your yard changes over the month,
    Erin

  5. You have captured the feeling so well, especially that lovely sunny feeling. Yet here in Colorado, we have 60+ degree weather, I see green shoots coming up, & want to tell them "wait, wait", it's not over yet. Our snowiest month is March.

  6. Today is was -36 degrees Celsius with the wind chill. Tomorrow it's supposed to get up to +6 degrees Celsius and then it's expected to dip below 0 into the 20's the day after. It's one of our famous Chinooks coming through...

  7. Love the line about your driveway looking like a luge track. Great image. And you also make me hopeful for spring. There are small signs. It was actually light outside as I waited for my son to get on the bus this morning.

  8. I love your imagery especially the icy ribbon. I too am ready for spring. Lately in TN we've had 60 degree weather in the afternoons, but I know that will change. It always does.
